Throughout the years, many folks have asked me for dieting advice since they know my history as an overweight teen who has overcome obesity.

While there are many things I could list off, the latest diet fad, recommendations backed by science, the knowledge of macros and how to use them etc., I always mention this one tip that surpasses them all.

I live in the south where sweet tea is a staple in most people’s fridge. If it’s not tea, that likens the consistency of maple syrup, it’s soda. It’s almost as if we were raised on sugary drinks straight off the teet! While these beverages aren’t solely to blame, they are a huge factor in weight gain.

Sweetened drinks (and alcohol) are basically empty calories. You could easily substitute almost an entire meal for a can of soda or a tumbler full of tea. It’s such a staple in our southern communities, that it’s hardly ever recognized for what it is. A complete waste of calories imbibed.

When asked for dieting advice, my first question has always been, “what does your fluid intake look like daily.” Usually this question is met with a frown and downcast gaze. That look alone answers my question!

So, my number one advice to those seeking to lose those extra pounds: cut out the tea and soda for two weeks and see what happens!

Of course no one wants to hear that because they just taste so damn good!

However, if they follow my advice, usually within two weeks they will notice a slight change in how their clothes fit. This small change alone is enough for a lot of people to seek additional tips on how to cut down on calorie intake.

That’s when the real work begins!

Tackle it one habit at a time!

Like most improvements in life, it all starts with micro habits. Take one small thing you do daily that you’d like to do differently and change it! Often the hardest part is just getting started!

But once you do and you catch that momentum — boy are you in for a wild ride of self efficacy!
